The Dowlais Male Choir has a membership of 60, its members are drawn from an area of about 30 miles around the County Borough of Merthyr Tydfil in the South Wales Valleys. The present choir goes back to 1965. It was a rebirth of the original male choir which disbanded in 1927 at the height of the depression, when so many men were forced to leave the area in search of work.
The Choir has enjoyed many successful tours, having performed in Bulgaria, Canada, USA, Holland, Luxembourg, Italy, Ireland, France and Brittany. They also toured Northern Cyprus, the first by a choir from the UK to do so, and performed as part of a Musical Festival, singing to great acclaim at Bellapais Abbey.
In 2005 the choir represented Wales at two Celtic Festivals in Paris and Lorient, Brittany. The choir sang at the Millennium Stadium in 2006 prior to the Wales v Australia rugby match and at the same venue backed Katherine Jenkins ( supported by some 70,000 fans) recording her single CD.
Dowlais Male Choir has also made TV appearances for BBC, HTV, S4C and has appeared at a Royal Command Performance before HRH The Prince of Wales; plus performances at the Royal Albert Hall.
In 2006/2007 the choir sang with Donny Osmond, Rolf Harris and Hayley Westenra. In 2008 the Choir was honoured again to represent the principality in Lorient, France at the 38th Inter Celtic Festival, which was hosted by Wales, where over 8 days they performed on 16 occasions.
2009 will again be a busy year with local performances and some further afield, including Birmingham, Tenby and Dorset; with the possibility of two London venues and a return trip to Hungerford where they have been made welcome for many years.
Like a number of choirs, chorister numbers are getting less, so any gentleman who wishes to join us and keep the Welsh choral tradition alive please contact the Deputy Chairman, Meurig Price on 01685 373271 or Secretary, Keith Morgan 01685 388230, or join us at rehearsal in Market Street, Church, Three Salmon Street, Merthyr Tydfil on Wednesdays or Sundays from 7.15pm.
